Chapter Seven: Daisy

By now, I had been pursuing my brother for two whole blocks. With my eyes fixed on his back, my lips repeatedly failed to clamp down on my straw. Ethan was certainly maneuvering around this sketchy neighborhood like it wasn't his first time around here. I hadn't heard from him since that night he'd gotten himself thrown out of the club. I'd just assumed he'd been held up at work – but the longer I spied on my brother, my suspicions were being realized. He was avoiding me.

But not for much longer – he wasn't getting away from me this time.

I followed Ethan as he cut through the yard of an abandoned pipe factory. He snuck to the edge of the chain-link fence, bent back a section where the links had been snipped off, and slipped right through. I sucked up the last of my strawberry slushie from my straw and tossed it into the trash, dashing across the street to keep up with him.

Ethan's secondhand pickup truck was waiting for him in the junk yard around the back. The clutter of spare parts and clutter looked like it had been intentionally cleared so cars – or most likely, just this car – could steer in and out of the lot and blend right back into the main roads unnoticed. When Ethan pulled back the door of the driver's seat, a few flakes of metallic blue paint peeled off the rickety vehicle.

Just before he could close his door, I raced to the passenger's side and jumped right in, ambushing him.

“Son of a –” Ethan jolted in his seat, withdrawing his hand from under his seat. “The hell? Daize? You can't just come jumping into people's cars like that – you got a death wish, or something?”

“What are you doing here?”

“What am I doing here?” Ethan reworded my question. I could see the gears in his head grinding behind his rounded eyes. “What are you doing here in Hamline? How did you even find –”

“What were you doing with Nancy Partridge?”

As my brother sat there in stone-cold silence, I folded my hands across my lap.

“Come on, Ethan. Please, just tell me what's going on. Being in the dark is exhausting – I mean, you heard what happened with Honey. How couldn't you have? It's all over the news.”

“I know. I heard. I'm really sorry it had to go down like that, Daize.” Ethan shifted in his seat, scratching the back of his head. “And don't worry, I won't say I told you so.”

“Well, you kinda just did.”

There was a short pause before I found myself doubling over with laughter. Honestly, it wasn't all that funny, but the release of much-needed endorphins lightened the load on my chest a notch. I ran a hand through my hair and relaxed against the headrest, removing the Bill Nye action figure burrowing itself within my butt crack.

“Why can't you talk to me, Ethan?”

“Daize, no offense, but you're one of the most judgmental people I know.
